Stephen Sutcliffe is a Glasgow based artist who creates film collages from an extensive archive of British television, film sound, broadcast images and spoken word recordings which he has been collecting since childhood. I found Stephen’s visual art quite interesting. He has been collecting lots of British television films and clips, images and sound and also extensive spoken word recordings since childhood. He creates short films and collages that really resonate with him, often about British culture and class. He said that he was quite a nervous person and wondered how people dealt with that, so “self doubt “ features in a lot of his works.

In his extensive editing process, he often makes the sound clash against the images which really makes you think about both things in different ways, be it sadness, or political or poetic. You would definitely see and hear things differently on repeat viewings.

I have always enjoyed filming and editing pieces over the last few years and was inspired growing up by my parents who have worked in the TV industry for years so it was good to listen to Stephen and watch some of his work and it will make me think about the use of sound with the pictures more in the future. However, it’s not necessarily a style that suits me. I enjoy playing with the speed of the film, be it slow motion or speeded up, jump cutting, using freeze frames and also cutting things in time with music which I’m also passionate about. I’ve always been inspired by visual things thats right there in front of me, whether its a crazy painting, or a music video, I like to envision the process that went behind it, as film making is a passion of mine. I like to appreciate peoples work and the creative minds that put together magical pieces of work.
