Roy Claire Potter is influenced by linguistics and performance theory and works across performance, publication, installation, and film to address received forms and modes of reading, writing, and speaking in order to rethink what it means to articulate. I decided to do some further research about the artist as I found myself zoning out in the lecture. Despite me having a short attention span I did however watch the video she played of them doing a live performance, which is something they had a great interest in doing. I found it quite confusing as they sat on the floor rearranging different pieces of paper and moulding them together to form sentences that they spoke out loud to an audience. Their work centres on the temporalities of traumatic experience and maintains a political focus on social and gendered violence, dialect and adolescence. Their work didn’t necessarily influence me or inspire me in anyway, but I could appreciate the passion that has been put into the work. I definitely could see the emotion in the performance, and I like when someone portrays their past experiences and their emotions into their art, as this is what I do. I believe you have to have the passion behind the work you’re doing for it to mean something.
